Caledon Driver Charged After Striking OPP Officer

A Caledon driver is facing charges after hitting an officer directing traffic.

On September 10, 2021, officers from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were in the process of clearing the intersection of Mayfield Road and Kennedy Road from a two-vehicle collision. In order to safely remove one of the vehicles involved, traffic was stopped in all directions. While one of the officers was directing traffic, a vehicle entered the intersection, struck the officer and drove away.

The vehicle was stopped by another officer a short distance away and the driver was arrested. As a result, a 53-year-old driver from Caledon was charged with Careless Driving and Disobeying an Officer Directing Traffic.

The driver is expected to appear at the Caledon East Provincial Offences Court on a later date to answer to the charges.

The officer did not sustain any injuries as a result of being struck by a vehicle.

Caledon OPP would like to remind all motorists that if a police officer is directing traffic where there are traffic lights, please stay alert, avoid all distraction and OBEY the officer – not the signals.
