Free fishing across Ontario on Mother’s Day weekend

If you aren’t sure what to do with Mom this weekend, why not take her fishing? For Mother’s Day weekend, the Ontario Government is allowing people to fish for free on waterways across the province.

“Free fishing is a great way to get out as a family to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy our beautiful lakes, rivers and streams,” Graydon Smith, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, said in a news release.

“Whether you’re new to fishing or have been doing it for years, what better way to kick off the spring season than enjoying fishing with family or friends, he added.”

Fishing licences are not required to fish this weekend. Still, the public is reminded that all conservation licence catch limits, size limits, sanctuaries and other fishing rules and regulations apply.

Fishers are also required to carry physical identification issued by the provincial or federal government, showing their name and date of birth.

This is the first of three free fishing weekends slated for this year, along with Father’s Day weekend and Family Fishing Week from June 29 to July 7.

Outside of free fishing periods, most Canadians between 18 and 64 must have an Outdoors Card and a fishing licence, available for purchase online at www.huntandfishontario.com.
