The National Day of Mourning takes place annually on April 28. The Town of Caledon council, staff and members of the public gathered at Town Hall to pause and observe a moment of silence to honour this important day.
“Today we gathered to renew our commitment to safe workplaces and preventing workplace tragedies,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “The Day of Mourning is a day where we remember and honour workers who have lost their lives or were injured in workplace accidents.”
In 2022, there were 993 workplace fatalities in Canada, with 33 of these deaths young workers aged 15-24, according to the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada. In addition, there were 348,747 accepted claims for workplace accidents/injuries. This was an increase of 71,530 from 2021.
The statistics are only part of the story though, as with every worker tragedy there are loved ones, family and friends who are impacted. The National Day of Mourning is a time to also pause and reflect on the impact workplace tragedies and injuries have on those we hold closest.
