Credit Valley Conservation issues water safety statement

Credit Valley Conservation has issued a water safety statement, warning that local streams and rivers could become dangerous amid the extended rainfall and possible thunderstorms.

The statement was issued at 12:29 p.m. Thursday, and said rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm are expected throughout today and tonight along with a risk of thunderstorms later in the afternoon.

“Flooding of the Credit River and its major tributaries are not expected, however, extended rainfall associated with thunderstorms may result in flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas,” the statement said. “Flows and levels will be higher than normal in all waterways throughout the watershed. As a result, local streams and rivers could become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges, and dams.”

The organization is advising the public to stay away from all watercourses and to keep children and pets away from these areas.
