John Creelman, Mayor of the Town of Mono was recently quoted saying his municipality is in a state of “road safety emergency.” Caledon residents may relate to his concerns.
Creelman has now authored a motion, which passed at Council on January 9th, outlining a number of issues including traffic fatality and collision statistics, out of date and inadequate penalties for speeding and other traffic infractions along with restrictions and red tape surrounding effective implementation of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) technology.
Creelman says all these matters have been raised repeatedly with MTO Ministers to no effect: “My latest letter to the MTO Minster was sent on October 19 and remains unanswered. Two consecutive requests to meet with the MTO Minister at municipal conferences were denied.”
The Mono Mayor is calling upon all Ontario municipalities to join with his in declaring a ‘road safety emergency’ and insist the Province recognize the severity of the situation.
Today Mayor Creelman sent JSC a copy of the following letter to the province for publication. Speaking with JSC by email this afternoon he said “I hope every municipality will join us in this effort to get the Province to take the necessary actions to make our roads safer and enforcement of penalties for speeding and other traffic offences more meaningful.”
