Today, Peel Regional Council endorsed the principles for approaching Peel Region’s 2024 budget and existing workplans, in light of the recently announced Bill 112 and the appointment of a Transition Board.
Peel residents, businesses and the community rely on the seamless delivery of high quality, efficient services. Maintaining these services to the Peel community without interruptions during the transition is critical and ensuring the wellbeing of staff who deliver and support the delivery of these services is of utmost importance.
Peel Region has established 12 principles that staff can use to assess how to proceed with previously approved projects and programs and how to prepare the 2024 budget. These decisions will be made in the public interest while having regard for the municipal restructuring, ensuring value for money, high quality efficient services and that other municipalities are not unreasonably impacted.
“As we navigate through this change, our priorities are to ensure that we continue our services to Peel community without interruption or service level reduction, and that our staff’s wellbeing is supported,” said Peel Region Chair Nando Iannicca.
On May 18, the Province introduced Bill 112, The Hazel McCallion Act which was passed on June 6. This Act will dissolve the Regional Municipality of Peel effective January 1, 2025, and make Brampton, Caledon, and Mississauga single tier municipalities. The Transition Board to facilitate the municipal restructuring is expected to be appointed by the end of July by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. The financial audit, also initiated by the Province, is expected to start at approximately the same time and run until the end of the year.
