Region of Peel Public Works Wins Two Awards

Kealy Dedman, Commissioner of Public Works, was honoured today by the Ontario Public Works Association as winner of the Top 10 Public Works Leader of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association (APWA).

The award, which is in its 63rd year, is one of APWA’s highest honours and is based on a lifetime of professional contributions. Kealy was chosen by past Top Ten recipients and the award recipients “embody professionalism, expertise, and personal dedication to improving the quality of life in their communities through the advancement of public works services and technology.”

Working closely with her over the past year, I have found her support and insights around our executive leadership table invaluable,” said Janice Baker, CAO at the Region of Peel. “The Region’s vital infrastructure is in good hands under the leadership of Kealy and her team.”

Since joining the Region of Peel in April 2021, Kealy has been a champion of sustainable and resilient public works. As Commissioner of Public Works, Kealy provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Public Works Department. This department, with an annual operating budget of over $850 million and a ten-year capital plan of $10 billion, is responsible for delivering Transportation, Waste Management, Water and Wastewater, Operations Support, Planning and Development, and TransHelp services to approximately 1.5 million people and over 175,000 businesses.

Bovaird Infiltration Facility Retrofit Project wins 2021 OPWA Project of the Year Award

Peel Region was also honoured for their work on the Bovaird Infiltration Facility Retrofit Project, which won the 2021 Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) Project of the Year Award in the Technical/Management Innovation category.

The innovative design of the Bovaird Infiltration Facility retrofit is a significant advancement in stormwater management. The site was converted to a large infiltration facility that provides flood control, infiltration, enhanced water quality and thermal mitigation.
