Caledon Chamber Concerts: Robert Kortgaard Trio

Our next concert takes place on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. and features the Robert Kortgaard Trio. The Trio comprises Robert Kortgaard, piano, Andrew Downing, double bass and Patricia O’Callaghan, soprano. The Trio will present a cabaret style program with music by composers such as Leonard Cohen, Kurt Weill, Francis Poulenc and Edith Piaf.

Pianist Robert Kortgaard was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. He completed his Bachelor and Master’s degrees at the Juilliard School in New York City. As a recipient of arts awards from the Canada Council, he furthered his musical studies in Italy and England. He has performed as a soloist with major Canadian orchestras and has given recitals throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in England, Finland, Portugal, Italy, Indonesia, the Czech Republic and China. His performances are frequently heard on CBC Radio. Robert Kortgaard is Artistic Director of the Leith Summer Festival in Ontario and the Under the Spire Music Festival on Prince Edward Island. He was musician-in-residence at the University of New Brunswick, he’s given piano masterclasses at Universities and Festivals in Canada and abroad, and he is frequently an adjudicator at festivals and national competitions.

Andrew Downing is a double bassist, composer/arranger, bandleader and music educator living in Toronto Canada. He composes and arranges music for his own groups as well as various chamber groups, world music groups, jazz groups and orchestras in Canada. His compositions have been played by a vast and varied array of musical groups such as The Vancouver Bach Choir, Ensemble Made in Canada, Ensemble Polaris, Toronto Masque Theatre and VC2. He was recently nominated for the Louis Applebaum Composition award through the Ontario Arts Council. As a bandleader, he has recorded ten of his own albums, four of which been nominated for Juno Awards, two of which won. He is currently teaching theory, ear training, improvisation, double bass, composition, and ensemble classes at the University of Toronto.

Soprano Patricia O’Callaghan is something of a wandering minstrel, with six solo albums and many interesting collaborations along the way. A speaker of French, Spanish, and German, her early recordings focused on European cabaret, but one of Patricia’s unique talents is the ability to blend a variety of languages and musical genres seamlessly in her concerts. Patricia has recently become faculty at The Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen’s University, and at The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity’s Evolution: Classical program. Her latest album, called Dark Butterflies, with music by David Braid, and with the Prague Epoque Orchestra, was recently released.
