Today, Regional Council received the Peel Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy to accelerate light-duty zero emission vehicle uptake across the community.
Transportation accounts for 35 per cent of the Region of Peel’s community greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) can produce no tailpipe emissions, resulting in improved air quality and mitigating the effects of climate change. With Ontario’s low carbon electricity, driving a ZEV is one of the most impactful ways a person can reduce their carbon footprint.
The Peel Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy has the following objectives:
- Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution from the transportation sector
- Improve business and resident knowledge on the benefits and costs of zero emission vehicles
- Increase zero emission vehicle driving experiences, availability, and ownership
- Enhance planning processes and access to charging infrastructure
- Promote local job creation and economic development
The Strategy was developed in collaboration through the Peel Climate Change Partnership, represented by the Town of Caledon, City of Brampton, City of Mississauga, Region of Peel, Credit Valley Conservation, and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. These member organizations work together to leverage economies of scale to coordinate climate change mitigation and adaptation projects across Peel Region. The Region of Peel’s continuing work with Peel Climate Change Partnership members to support community ZEV uptake will contribute significantly to the achievement of community GHG emissions reduction targets.
The Region of Peel will be a leader in the ZEV transition and is committed to making ZEVs the first choice for future fleet needs. Over the 2018 to 2022 Term of Council, 81 charging connectors were installed to support public, staff and fleet electric vehicles. Currently, the Region’s fleet includes more than 40 ZEVs. In-progress and planned ZEV pilot projects include Peel Regional Police’s Mustang Mach-Es, TransHelp buses and waste collection trucks.
As municipalities, we have an opportunity to lead the charge in the electrification of vehicles. Enabling a switch to zero emission vehicles will significantly decrease transportation related greenhouse gas emissions in Peel Region and support broader global efforts to fight the climate emergency, one electric vehicle at a time.”
