The National Day of Mourning takes place annually on April 28. The Town of Caledon council, staff and members of the public gathered at Town Hall to pause and observe a moment of silence to honour this important day.

“Today we gathered to renew our commitment to safe workplaces and preventing workplace tragedies,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “The Day of Mourning is a day where we remember and honour workers who have lost their lives or were injured in workplace accidents.”

In 2022, there were 993 workplace fatalities in Canada, with 33 of these deaths young workers aged 15-24, according to the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada. In addition, there were 348,747 accepted claims for workplace accidents/injuries. This was an increase of 71,530 from 2021.

The statistics are only part of the story though, as with every worker tragedy there are loved ones, family and friends who are impacted. The National Day of Mourning is a time to also pause and reflect on the impact workplace tragedies and injuries have on those we hold closest.

Japanese automaker announces huge investment in Alliston https://www.myboltonnow.com/90337/local-news/japanese-automaker-announces-huge-investment-in-alliston/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 17:39:30 +0000 https://www.myboltonnow.com/?p=90337

Honda is set to build an electric vehicle battery plant next to its Alliston assembly plant.

The automaker said it is going to retool the factory to produce fully electric vehicles, all part of a $15-billion project that could include up to $5 billion of taxpayer dollars. The two plants are expected to create 1,000 jobs on top of retaining the existing 4,200 jobs.

The deal does not involve production subsidies, something that played a big role in attracting two other automakers to build battery plants in Windsor and St. Thomas.  The United States offers manufacturers with incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act.

The federal government is expected to give Honda close to $2.5 billion through tax credits for clean technology manufacturing and electric vehicle supply chain investments. Ontario has committed $2.5 billion directly to cover capital expenses and today’s announcement also said the province will cover site servicing costs.

The $15-billion project includes the retooled plant, an electric vehicle battery plant in the vicinity, and two battery parts facilities located elsewhere in Ontario. No word yet on where they may be.

Caledon awarded Burlington Cup for its aquatics lifesaving program https://www.myboltonnow.com/90324/local-news/caledon-awarded-burlington-cup-for-its-aquatics-lifesaving-program/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 14:34:47 +0000 https://www.myboltonnow.com/?p=90324

The Town of Caledon has been recognized for its aquatic lifesaving program by being awarded the Burlington Cup.

The honour comes from the Lifesaving Society, a national organization that leads drowning prevention programs, initiatives, and education across Canada.

The Burlington Cup is awarded to a municipality with the largest lifesaving program in a community with a population between 50,000 and 100,000 in Ontario. The Town of Caledon won the award, in large part, thanks to its free aquatic leadership courses, a program that council strongly endorsed in late 2022 through to 2023. The Town will continue to provide access to training opportunities for all, in Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard and Swim and Lifesaving Instructor courses, where only material and exam fees apply to participants.

“Winning this award is a fantastic endorsement for the effectiveness of our free aquatic leadership program and the efforts of our team to rebuild our staff after COVID,” said Catherine McLean, Commissioner of Community and Human Services. “We are proud of our training program that not only helps keep Caledon safe but contributes to building future leaders in our community. We are thrilled to have been named the winner of the Burlington Cup.”

The free aquatic leadership program provides training and extends water-safe practices to the community. The town says it also has increased the number of candidates for employment with its aquatic division. This has allowed the town to maintain its workforce and continue to offer programs and services at local pools with little interruption.

The town also participates in National Drowning Prevention Week which takes place annually during the third week of July. This initiative promotes ways that families and those responsible for children can enjoy the warm weather while staying safe around water.

EV battery announcement expected this week https://www.myboltonnow.com/90313/local-news/ev-battery-announcement-expected-this-week/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 18:30:09 +0000 https://www.myboltonnow.com/?p=90313

Honda Canada is apparently ready to build an electric vehicle battery plant near its auto manufacturing facility in Alliston. The factory is slated to produce electric vehicles in the future.

The Canadian Press has learned that the federal and Ontario governments will make the announcement this week. Senior sources with information on the project confirmed the deal but were not yet able to give any dollar figures.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford told a First Nations conference Monday morning there will be an announcement this week about a deal that will be double the size of a Volkswagen deal announced last year. The St. Thomas development is estimated to be worth $7 million.

The Honda facility would be the third electric vehicle battery plant in Ontario. The first two are the Volkswagen and Stellantis LG plant in Windsor. Securing those deals included billions of dollars in production subsidies to compete with the United States' Inflation Reduction Act subsidies. The Canadian Press says Honda's is expected to involve capital commitments and tax credits.

Negotiations took a major step forward that July, when Ontario sent a formal letter to Honda Canada, signalling its willingness to offer incentives for a battery plant and EV production. Honda Canada executives then met with Ford in November and December.

Support staff at the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board are not hitting the picket lines.

The school board has reached a tentative agreement with the Dufferin-Peel Educational Resource Workers Association, the union representing education resources workers and designated early childhood educators.

“We value our relationships with our bargaining units and are pleased to be able to make this announcement,” said Marianne Mazzorato, director of education. “This is great news for parents, guardians, students and staff alike, and ensures a continuity of learning with no disruption to services.”

The union, which represents 1,200 staff at the school board, had announced its intent to take strike action in late March. The plan was to walk off the job one day a week beginning the last week of April.

The tentative agreement does need to be ratified by both sides.
