Town opens another dog park

A new leash-free dog park has opened in Caledon.

The Mayfield West Off-Leash Dog Park, located at 12227 Kennedy Rd. north of Highway 410 South, was expected to be completed May 31 but instead opened Aug. 21.

“Although the completion took longer than anticipated, I believe the delay was worthwhile,” Ward 2 Coun. Dave Sheen said in an email Thursday. “There were some supply issues with the shade structure, but allowing the new sod to better establish itself before use was also beneficial.”

The project had been in the works since June 2020, when Caledon council asked town staff to investigate possible dog park locations in the Mayfield West neighbourhood.

“This new leash-free dog park is a testament to our commitment to creating vibrant, inclusive spaces for all of our residents — two-legged and four-legged alike,” Mayor Annette Groves stated in a news release.

The park features separate fenced areas for small and large dogs, a parking lot, a double-gated entrance, pathways, picnic tables, tree plantings and a shade structure with cluster seating.

Catherine McLean, the town’s community and human services commissioner, said the park is a great addition to the community.

“It’s all about supporting the quality of life of all our residents and fostering connections between neighbours and their beloved pets,” she said.

The $565,000 park was funded via development charges.

Caledon’s other dog parks are located at 12889 Coleraine Dr. in Bolton and 6125 Old Church Rd. in Caledon East.
