The town’s General Committee has voted to reinstate the Canadian National Anthem at regularly scheduled council meetings.
The move follows a motion from councillor Mario Russo presented at yesterday’s General Committee meeting. The practice of playing the national anthem will start after council approval on July 23 with a review on updating when to play the anthem at which meetings moving forward in the fall.
“The national anthem serves as a powerful symbol of unity, reminding us of our collective heritage and the freedoms we enjoy,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “By bringing it back, we reaffirm our commitment to these principles and the respect we hold for our nation and its history.”
In a news release, the town said the anthem symbolizes national identity and pride.
“It is common for the anthem to be played at events and ceremonies, as a sign of respect and appreciation for Canada. Its performance and observance contribute to the cultural and historical continuity of the country,” it said.
