Officers with the Caledon detachment of the OPP are frustrated with the actions of drivers after four impaired and six stunt-driving charges were laid from May 2 to May 5.
One-hundred-sixty other traffic-related charges were also levied in the area.
Const. Ian Michel said drivers just aren’t getting the message.
“It’s been out there since, golly, even when I was born almost 50 years ago. The message hasn’t changed. I don’t know if the courts have to do more. We are doing as much as we can. The public just needs to clue in and understand it’s not tolerated. You can not drink and drive. You can not drive stunt speeds. People will die based on these actions and that’s the part we struggle with every day.”
Motorists charged with impaired driving offences had their driver’s licenses suspended for 90 days, and vehicles impounded for seven days. The six drivers charged with stunt driving had their licenses suspended for 30 days and their vehicles impounded for 14 days.
Police also charged three men, one from Toronto and two from Brampton, with possession of stolen property under $5,000 following a traffic stop on Sunday.
Michel said that ultimately, it comes down to the person operating the motor vehicle.
“People have to recognize they are responsible for their actions. We will do our part and the public is doing their part by calling in impaired drivers and other areas of concern.”
He added driving is a privilege, not a right, and speed limits exist for a reason – to protect people in the community as well as drivers who may get into a situation where they can’t control their vehicle at a high rate of speed.
