Caledon man one of five charged in Waterloo Region butter thefts

A Caledon resident and four people from Brampton have been charged after a string of butter thefts in the Waterloo region. The heists resulted in losses of more than $8,000 for grocery stores.

Police in the Waterloo Region say they have investigated 15 butter and ghee thefts at grocery stores in Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo between September and February.

Following an investigation, three men and one woman from Brampton, aged 38, 32, 25 and 24, along with a 29-year-old from Caledon, were charged with several crimes including theft under $5,000.

Peel police charged a half-dozen people in January with similar crimes after $60,000 worth of butter and ghee products was reported stolen in the region. Six people, including three from Brampton, were charged by Peel police with either possession of property obtained by crime or theft under $5,000.

Peel police continue to look into the butter thefts, as well as businesses that accept the stolen products.
