Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold alert for Peel and other southern Ontario communities.
Bitterly cold temperatures are expected from Tuesday night until Wednesday morning. The national agency said wind chill values of around -30 C to as low as -35 C are possible.
“An Arctic air mass will bring bitterly cold wind chills to the area tonight. Temperatures will moderate Wednesday afternoon,” according to the advisory.
Environment Canada explained the extreme cold from the current polar vortex puts everyone at risk and has advice for anyone venturing outdoors.
“Watch for cold-related symptoms including shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Dress warmly and dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.”
Other advice includes covering all skin to avoid frostbite and check on older family members, friends and neighbours.
“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” the advisory added.
