Officers from the Caledon OPP have arrested two suspects in connection with the assault of a municipal law enforcement officer.
On Nov. 24 just after 2 a.m. police responded to an assault on Fallview Circle, in the community of Southfields Village. Police say a bylaw officer was assaulted by a group of people in the course of their duties. The officer was transported to hospital and the injuries were later deemed to be minor.
Police located one suspect yesterday and a second today. The identity of a third suspect remains unknown.
A 33-year-old from Brampton and a 26-year-old from Caledon have been charged with assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm. Both accused are being held for a bail hearing today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville.
“The safety of our community is paramount. No one should endure violence while performing their duties. We are committed to ensuring justice for the assaulted municipal law enforcement officer and encourage anyone with information to come forward,” said Caledon OPP commander Natalie Majer in a release. “Together, we can maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone,” she added.
Caledon mayor Annette Groves thanked police officers for their swift action in making two arrests. “This is the first time in recent years that there was an assault on a bylaw officer while on the job. No one should ever face the risk of violence when they go to work. Employee safety remains our top priority, and we continue to work with our entire staff team to ensure they feel safe when they come to work.”
