Town buys property for future development

The Town of Caledon has purchased a property on Airport Road to support the revitalization and beautification of Caledon East’s downtown core.

A press release from the town said the Caledon East Revitalization Task Force, led by residents, staff, and council members, has been directed to figure out the best community use for the property.

“The renewal of downtown Caledon East has been a key priority for me since I joined council in 2022,” said Coun. Doug Maskell, who represents Ward 3 and is a task force member. “This was a rare opportunity for the town to secure land along a major road for resident and public use. Special thanks to town staff, who worked diligently on this project, and to my council peers for supporting this acquisition.”

The land is close to a half-acre in size and is located adjacent to the Caledon Trailway at the southwest corner of Airport Road and Emma Street. It is currently vacant and has been used for various uses, including storage and parking.

“The property has been vacant since I moved to Caledon several decades ago,” said Regional Coun. Christina Early, who represents Wards 1, 2, and 3. “The purchase is a signal to residents and businesses that the Town is committed to revitalizing Caledon East and transforming it into a more attractive and livable village.”

The task force works with town staff and other stakeholders on a wide range of revitalization opportunities. These include preserving the culture and history of the downtown, building the economic vitality for small businesses, and establishing community projects and events, beautification activities, tourism, wayfinding, and visitor initiatives.
