Community group offers solutions to Caledon traffic woes

A recently formed community group wants to see safer roads in the town and now, Caledon Community Road Safety Advocacy (CCRSA) has offered some concrete ideas to do so.

The group’s spokesperson, Cheryl Connors, said increased enforcement is the number one weapon to reduce collisions and deaths on Caledon roads.

“Whether that’s putting more police officers on the road, more speed cameras, whatever tools are necessary to slow people down and have consequences if they don’t. That’s where the province needs to be at the table. Maybe they need to start increasing fines.”

She added something needs to be done to get people to drive more carefully and the speeds she sees around her residence are terrifying.

“On my road, the speed limit is 60. I am not exaggerating that people are going 120 every single day. It’s also supposed to be a no-truck route but I can sit there and its truck after truck because they use it as a bypass. People call my road the Tottenham Expressway.”

Connors is fully aware that more policing costs more money but she explained increased enforcement is the best way to improve safety.

“Whether that’s putting more police officers on the road, more speed cameras, whatever tools are necessary to slow people down and have consequences. That’s where the province needs to be at the table to increase fines for dangerous driving so it’s not just a slap on the wrist, a few demerit points and a few hundred bucks.”

Connors also believes increased revenue from more fines would offset a hike in the police budget. She added the large volume of trucks in the town only adds to driver error.

“It increases driver frustration. They behave even more recklessly any time truck enforcement is done an alarming number are taken off our roads and charges laid for serious infractions.

Close to 200 people held a solemn walk outside the Humber River Community Centre before a Town of Caledon community traffic safety meeting.
