Truth and Reconciliation being recognized in Caledon

The Town of Caledon is holding what the municipality calls meaningful events and initiatives in recognition of today’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day serves as an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the legacy of residential schools and to honour Indigenous survivors, their families and communities. Mayor Annette Groves raised an ‘Every Child Matters’ flag at town hall at 1:30 this afternoon.

“Caledon has been on a bit of a journey the last few years, stemming from some deep relational work we did with our treaty partners at the Mississauga of the Credit First Nations,” said Sandra Sharpe, the town’s Indigenous Engagement Advisor. “We really wanted to look at how we can put more action into those words.”

Sharpe explained her position came out of those conversations and the town has community development partners who come up with engagement ideas.

“We are proud we have moved that dial along very well.”

She added the town also has an internal program to educate employees.

“We are encouraging staff to wear orange and we are screening a film for staff dealing with the tragic circumstances around the residential school system.”

Caledon’s Town Hall has been also lit up in orange throughout September. “The orange lighting serves as a visible reminder of the importance of acknowledging this history and standing in solidarity with Indigenous peoples,” added Sharp.

Among the other educational opportunities is a travelling exhibit called “Honouring the History of the Mississaugas at the Credit River” which will be set up at various locations across Caledon until the end of October.
