Copper thieves targeting telephone wires in Caledon

A rash of copper thefts has police in Caledon searching for suspects.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, thieves targeted telephone wires in six separate copper thefts that were reported in August. The thefts occurred in rural areas, during the middle of the night, say police.

Police spokesperson Joe Brisbois said that the wires were cut from poles and dragged to the side of the road where they were recovered a day or two later.

He added the increase in thefts could be the result of people struggling financially.

“It’s easy. If you are struggling and can’t pay your rent. Times are tough and these are easy opportunities to make money. Once someone gets stuck in that trend it’s hard to get out of it.”

Anyone who notices a suspicious vehicle on the side of the road, potentially in the process of cutting or taking telephone wires, is asked to call 911.
