Caledon Fire and Emergency Services are joining communities across Ontario and asking citizens to test their smoke alarms on Sept. 28 – Test Your Smoke Alarm Day.
Caledon’s Volunteer Fire Educators will be visiting homes in Caledon on Saturday. If you get a knock on the door, you will be asked if you would like your alarm tested and have a Saved by the Beep sign on your lawn. Anyone saying yes will receive a coupon for a local business as a thank you.
“A working smoke alarm is integral to give you and your family the time you need to escape a fire,” said Caledon Fire Dave Chief Pelayo.
“Testing your smoke alarms at least once a month, replacing the batteries once a year, and replacing smoke alarms older than 10 years are all important maintenance activities to keep smoke alarms functioning properly. A few simple chores today might just save your life tomorrow,” he added in a press release.
In 2023, 111 fatal fires in Ontario resulted in the death of 123 people. Close to half of the homes involved did not have working smoke alarms on every floor.
Test Your Smoke Alarm Day was launched to encourage all Ontarians to learn more about smoke alarms, fire safety and home fire escape planning. It is led by Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal, in partnership with community stakeholders, agencies, and sponsors. For more information visit www.savedbythebeep.ca.
