Heat event hits Peel

Environment Canada has put Peel Region under a weather warning.

The national weather agency has issued a heat warning for Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.

“A heat event expected to begin on Sunday and may continue into Tuesday,” the warning for Peel residents states.

A hot and humid air mass hit southern Ontario on Sunday. Daytime maximum temperatures reached 31 C with humidex values near 40. There will be little relief at night as minimum temperatures are expected to be near 20 C, says the release.

Hot and humid air “can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category,” added the release.

The rising heat has prompted heat warnings in southern Ontario, primarily for the Golden Horseshoe and southwestern Ontario — although it’s still hot everywhere else, just not quite reaching the threshold for heat warnings, typically of daytime temperatures of 31 C which do not fall below 21 C at night.

“A cooler air mass is expected to arrive Tuesday night,” stated the release.
