Say Hello to Spring with the Caledon Public Library

The snowy weather is finally winding down and the warmer weather will soon be upon us in no time! In the meantime, we can expect a lot of rain – April showers bring May flowers, right?

April is filled with lots of activities for Teens to have fun!

Teen Café programs are run by student volunteers who wish to gain experience helping to plan and run events as members of the Teen Advisory Group (TAG). This month, they will be hosting an after-hours Karaoke Night at the Albion Bolton branch on Friday, April 14th at 6:00pm! Teens can show off their singing talent by picking their favourite songs to sing as a group or go solo. Registration is required.

Want to learn a new skill? On Tuesday, April 25th at 6:30pm at the Southfields Village branch, teens can combine painting with embroidery to make Embroidered Canvas Art. No prior embroidery knowledge or experience is needed. Registration required.

April is also National Poetry Month! To celebrate, CPL is offering teens the chance to create their own Blackout Poetry! Register to pick up one of our kits and create your own blackout poetry.  Blackout poetry is a mixture of poetry and art made by taking any form of printed text and blacking out the unwanted words to create a poem or statement. Snap a photo of your poem and send it to [email protected] for your chance to win a gift card and be featured on our Instagram account, @teensofcpl!

Teens can shake off those rainy-day blues by checking out these great poetry titles:

My Shouting, Shattered, Whispering Voice by Patrice Vecchione

Guide to Writing Poetry & Speaking Your Truth

The book includes prompts and inspiration, writing suggestions and instruction, brief interviews with some current popular poets such as Kim Addonizio, Safia Elhillo, and others, with poem excerpts scattered throughout the book.

Inheritance by Elizabeth Acevedo

A Visual Poem

In her most famous spoken-word poem, author of the Pura Belpré-winning novel-in-verse The Poet X Elizabeth Acevedo embraces all the complexities of Black hair and Afro-Latinidad–the history, pain, pride, and powerful love of that inheritance.

When You Ask Me Where I’m Going by Jasmin Kaur

The six sections of the book explore what it means to be a young woman living in a world that doesn’t always hear her and tell the story of Kiran as she flees a history of trauma and raises her daughter, Sahaara, while living undocumented in North America.

Home is Not a Country by Safia Elhillo

Novel in Verse

Nima doesn’t feel understood. By her mother, who grew up far away in a different land. By her suburban town, which makes her feel too much like an outsider to fit in and not enough like an outsider to feel like that she belongs somewhere else. At least she has her childhood friend Haitham, with whom she can let her guard down and be herself. Until she doesn’t.

Voices in the Air by Naomi Shihab Nye

Poems for Listeners

A collection of almost one hundred original poems written by the award-winning poet Naomi Shihab Nye in honor of the artists, writers, poets, historical figures, ordinary people, and diverse luminaries from past and present who have inspired her. Full of words of encouragement, solace, and hope, this collection offers a message of peace and empathy.
