ecoCaledon’s Environmental New Years Resolutions

What better way to start off the year than to set your new year’s resolutions? Most resolutions are focused on personal improvements – eating healthier, paying down debt, traveling more, etc… How about adding a few resolutions that are good for you and the planet?

Here are our top 7…

BECOME A CONSCIOUS CONSUMER – “Buy less. Choose well. Make it last” – Vivienne Westwood. If you are choosing to live more sustainably this year, start with what you are purchasing. We as consumers have a huge influence on what businesses manufacture and how they do it. We have the ability to shop with intention and advocate for sustainability.

START GOING ZERO WASTE – The start of the new year is also a great time to make small changes towards a zero waste lifestyle. If you are at the start of your zero waste journey consider small steps like saying “NO” to single use plastics and choosing reusable. If you are looking to kick it up a notch, advocate for BYO options at your local grocery store or favourite restaurants and check out options for zero waste like refilling – Turtle Green Refillery

WATCH WHAT YOU EAT – People don’t like to hear this one, but cutting beef intake is one of the quickest ways to lower your carbon footprint. The simplest explanation for this is that it takes a lot of energy to get that steak on your plate. Even just switching to a flexitarian diet where animal products are not the star of a meal can make a significant impact on your carbon footprint.

CONSIDER YOUR ENERGY CHOICES –  For many of us, the biggest portion of our carbon footprint comes from the fuels we burn to drive our cars, heat our homes and power our appliances. Actions can be as simple and inexpensive as remembering to unplug chargers and turn off the lights when you leave the room to choosing electric for your next vehicle.

MAKE CHANGE WITH YOUR MONEY – How you choose to invest can help fight climate change. Many banks and investment firms offer different options to help you divest from fossil fuels and other activities that contribute to climate change.

SPEND MORE TIME IN NATURE – Most of us spend too much time indoors and in front of our screens. Spending 30 minutes a day in nature can make you healthier, happier and reduce stress while also deepening your appreciation of nature. David Suzuki’s One Nature Challenge is a great place to start.

TALK ABOUT CLIMATE – We all have a role to play in tackling climate change. No one can do everything, but when everyone does something, our actions add up to reduce carbon emissions and increase the momentum for positive change! What’s one of the best things you can do? Talk about climate change and inspire others to join in the conversation – Project Neutral.

We only have one planet. We have nowhere else to go. If we use our creative powers properly we don’t need anywhere else. If we take care of it, and each other, everything we need is right here – Sir Ken Robinson
