The Region of Peel has launched a ‘Don’t Speed’ awareness campaign aimed at changing people’s perceptions of speeding and reinforcing that driving the speed limit can save lives.
With close to 26,000 speeding tickets and more than 1,600 charges issued in Peel for stunt driving in 2021, speeding on Peel roadways continues to be a serious problem. Stunt driving violations increase during the warmer months with charges resulting in an immediate 30-day roadside suspension, fines up to $10,000 as well as other serious consequences.
When a driver chooses to drive over the posted speed limit, they endanger their own safety and the safety of others, including pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers. Driving the speed limit can prevent collisions from happening and can reduce the severity when they do happen.
The Region is working with local municipalities, community groups, agencies and partner organizations and other local partners like Peel Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police to reduce collisions and serious injuries on Peel roadways.
“The Vision Zero approach focuses on everyone’s responsibility to be aware of their surroundings and follow the rules of the road,” said Sean Carrick, Manager, Traffic Engineering, Region of Peel. “We encourage drivers to take time to read the messages shared from Peel and local organizations and make efforts to plan ahead and leave enough time to safely get to their destination. By choosing not to speed, we can make our roads safer for all road users.”
