With Omicron overshadowing our communities and Christmas celebrations at the end of last year, Palgrave’s small Rotary Club is proud to have been able to conduct the annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Palgrave Stationlands Park.

The event was attended by approximately 200 people from the area. Lots of activities were offered by local organisations such as the Girl Guides and Ontario Rural Skills Network. The highlight was of course Santa’s visit, but also a Christmas song contest between young singers from two local music schools, Hit That Note Studio and Tishos Music Academy.

Engagement in the local community such as organizing events, providing equipment and funds for the skating pond maintenance, as well as the winter maintenance of the Rotary Park area is at the heart of Palgrave Rotary.

Since November 2021, the club has also been collecting laptops for youth in the Indigenous community of Nibinamik, where access to remote learning is difficult due to unavailable equipment. With the support of the Town of Caledon, which donated 57 laptops, Palgrave Rotary collected 64 devices. This represented the bulk of the over 80 laptops that were collected by Canadian Rotary Clubs in total.

Being a small but committed club, Palgrave Rotary was able to grow their membership by six members last year with a considerable low number of retiring members. This achievement didn’t go unnoticed. Palgrave Rotary received the New Member Retention Award 2020/2021 for the district.

The Club also received appreciation from the district for their financial support of the “End Polio Now: Make History Today Campaign”. Erasing polio globally is one of the big goals of Rotary Clubs world-wide.

100 Women Who Care in Caledon decided to support Palgrave Rotary with a donation of $5,400, ensuring that the Club can move forward and support many more projects that enhance living in our community despite a second year of having less opportunity for fundraising events.

The Club currently meets bi-weekly on Thursday evenings on Zoom and plans to return to in-person meetings in spring. New members and guests are always welcome.
