Ready for blazing a new adventure, but stuck in the house? Waiting to experience some far off land, but not ready to travel? Stressed out and looking for some inexpensive but effective relaxation? You need only to put down your phone and pick up a book.
Letting yourself get carried off into those pages may have more advantages than you’d think. Aside from the obvious vocabulary expansion and increased knowledge books provide an abundance of other benefits for your well-being.
As you read focus and concentration improve, tension reduces, your imagination is nourished, and your heart rate slows. It is like a workout, but for your brain. It is also thought that reading sharpens memory and slows cognitive decline.
Reading to, or with, our children not only launches the benefits mentioned above but also builds mind muscle, sets the stage for lifelong learning, and strengthens family bonds.
One of my personal favourite shops in Bolton is Forster’s Book Garden. It’s not just the smell of books as you step over the threshold, it’s the vivid pop of colour in the toys, the immediate desire to see one of those puzzles spread out on my table, the intriguing array of stocking stuffers and, of course, the symmetry of those rows and rows of books….each one with the ability to transport me…to an adventure or a place I have yet to visit.
Donna and Paul Forster are Bolton residents who have dedicated 22 years to the business of bringing you books. In recent years they’ve added the toys, games, puzzles and gift items to help round out your shopping experience.
Whether it’s something for someone on your Christmas list, or a glorious adventure for yourself, this is a “shop local” opportunity you will not want to miss. After all, they say that reading about it is almost the same as being there.
Visit Forster’s Book Garden at 266 Queen Street South, Bolton or their website
