Peel Public Health is issuing an amendment to the Letter of Instruction issued October 15, 2021 that requires all people aged 12 and older who participate in indoor organized sports and recreational activities, including players, coaches, and officials, to provide proof of vaccination. This amendment is being issued in coordination with public health units in both Toronto and York Region.
Effective January 1, 2022, the amendment provides children who turn 12 years-old in 2022 a grace period of 12 weeks from their birthdate, during which they will not need to show proof of vaccination at indoor sports facilities. Children who were born in 2009 are currently eligible for vaccination and can receive two doses of vaccine to meet the requirements outlined in the Letter of Instruction.
“For children turning 12 in 2022, we recognize that parents need time to be able to get their children vaccinated. Effective January 1, the letter of instruction will provide for a grace period of 12 weeks following their birthday to allow them time to meet proof of vaccination requirements at indoor sports facilities” says Dr. Loh, Medical Officer of Health, Peel Region. “We know how important recreation activities are for the physical and mental health of youth and want to ensure that they can continue to participate while they access the protection that vaccines provide.”
Vaccine is the best form of protection against COVID-19 so residents who are eligible are encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Peel Public Health continues to expand its vaccine system to provide accessible options for residents and to accommodate eligible third dose and booster doses as well as pediatric vaccinations - once approved by Health Canada and the Ontario government. Details on getting vaccinated are available on our website.
