Motorists Reminded to Watch for Wildlife Following Several Collisions Over Weekend

Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Caledon Detachment are reminding motorists to be mindful of wildlife while driving following several collisions over the past weekend.

Members of the OPP Caledon Detachment responded to seven motor vehicle collisions involving deer throughout the Town of Caledon from the afternoon of Friday, November 5, 2021 to the morning of Monday, November 8, 2021. Luckily there were no serious injuries to motorists, though several of the deer were killed resulting from the collisions.

Motorists are reminded to be mindful of wildlife in and around roadways. To assist in reducing the risk of being involved in a wildlife related motor vehicle collision motorists can follow these simple hints:

  • Slow down and keep your eyes on the road – especially during the early morning, late afternoon and at night. Deer are more active at dawn and dusk.
  • Brake, don’t swerve. Swerving to avoid an animal can put you at risk for hitting another vehicle or losing control of your vehicle. It can also confuse the animal as to which way to go. Instead, just slow down as quickly and safely as you can. Your odds for surviving an accident are better when hitting an animal than hitting another vehicle.
  • “Where there’s one, there’s usually more” often holds true. Deer travel in groups, so if you see one run across the road, slow down and expect others to follow.
  •  Buckle up. A seat belt is your best defense for minimizing your risk in a collision.

If you are involved in a collision please move your vehicle off to a safe location if possible and call police. If the animal is still in the roadway please do not try and remove it yourself, this would put you in a dangerous position for a secondary collision.
