In honour of Remembrance Day in 2002, the Caledon East & District Historical Society published For Those Who Served, a book written by Bolton native, Murray Hesp, with introductions by Ken Weber, well-known local author.

This book was nominated by the Mayor and Caledon Council and won an award in the Cultural Category of the Heritage Community Recognition Program for 2003, which is sponsored by the Ontario Heritage Foundation.

The book outlines the war time experiences of the men and women from the Town of Caledon and neighbouring areas.  The letters written by those who served contain many graphic and poignant accounts of the hardships endured, the battles fought and the insights gained during the two World Wars.

Murray’s main purpose in doing this research and writing this book was to ensure that we preserve the memory of those from our community who served in two significant events in an important time in our history. Many of the younger generation have no recollection of the events of the two World Wars and, because of Murray’s work with Ken’s introductions, they will now be able to learn of those people in their own community who served in these conflicts.

This book will serve as a great comment for years to come on an important time in our local history. Copies of For Those Who Served were placed in all of the local schools and libraries. There are still a few copies available.  You can get one by contacting the Historical Society at [email protected].  The price is $25., plus the cost of mailing if that is necessary.
