Applications Open For Student Journalist Internships (Remote)

The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) is now accepting applications for its 2021 Autumn Internship. The intern(s) selected will be engaged in important tasks that will see them work collaboratively with the CAJ’s board of directors, its members, and other journalists.

This internship will run from Sept. 27-Dec. 17, 2021. Past interns have made huge contributions to Canadian journalism through the CAJ’s ongoing advocacy, research, or professional development work, such as the Canadian Newsroom Diversity Survey and the CAJ’s Mentorship Program for Journalists.

This opportunity is open exclusively to post-secondary students who can use the internship program for academic credit. If you do not qualify for the internship but are interested in volunteering with the CAJ, please send us an email to: [email protected]

Duties could include:

  • Assisting the CAJ board of directors with the launch of the Canadian Newsroom Diversity Survey, including connecting with newsrooms and maintaining contact lists.
  • Working closely with the CAJ’s Community Manager to create videos and other visual materials to highlight CAJ advocacy and programming.
  • Assisting with research for select board committees.
  • Assisting with CAJ conference and other event planning.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

The ability to speak and write in French will be considered as a strong asset.

The CAJ offers a small honorarium ($500), a free one-year CAJ membership, free access to CAJ professional development (including a mentor) and a CAJ membership card to the successful candidate(s).

Please note that most of the work will be done remotely since the CAJ’s board members are spread out across the country and we don’t have a main office.

Applicants are to submit a one-page letter of interest, including a description of how you feel your skills can advance the CAJ’s core mandate; a copy of your CV, and up to three published pieces or examples of work. Please send all inquiries and applications to [email protected] with the subject line ‘CAJ internship September 2021’.

Internship applications will be accepted until September 15 at 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).

The Canadian Association of Journalists is a professional organization with more than 1000 members across Canada. The CAJ’s primary roles are public-interest advocacy work and professional development for its members.
